University of Coimbra

The University of Coimbra (UC) is a key player in projects related to health and medical devices, supported by its long tradition in medical education, scientific excellence, and strong connections to the clinical setting. Founded in 1290, UC is one of the oldest universities in Europe and plays a central role in teaching, research, and knowledge transfer.

With one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools, the UC School of Medicine plays a central role in training healthcare professionals and conducting biomedical research, promoting an integrated approach across science, technology, and clinical practice.

This capability is reinforced by its close collaboration with the Coimbra University Hospital, one of the country’s leading university hospitals, enabling the development, testing, and validation of solutions in a real clinical setting.

UC also stands out for its strong research component, with more than 30 R&D centers and units, including leading-edge facilities in the fields of biomedical engineering, imaging, neuroscience, and data science—all of which are fundamental to the medical device sector. Notable in this context are units such as the iCBR and the CIBIT, which operate at the intersection of biomedical research and clinical application.

At the same time, UC is strongly committed to internationalization and advanced education, participating in programs of excellence such as MIT Portugal and UT Austin, and hosting a significant international academic community.
