The University of Beira Interior (UBI) plays a particularly significant role in the health sector, grounded in a strong integration of engineering, digital technologies, and health sciences. Although it is one of the newest public universities in Portugal, UBI has established itself as a leading institution in teaching, research, and innovation, while also demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability and digital transition.
Its multidisciplinary structure is fundamental to the health and medical device sectors. In this context, three of UBI’s five colleges stand out: the College of Health Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the College of Sciences.
These faculties have faculty members and researchers who collaborate on fundamental, applied, and clinical research, and train students at the intersection of the Exact Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering, enabling an effective link between research, academic innovation, and the requirements of clinical practice.
This connection is strengthened by the university’s proximity to the Cova da Beira University Hospital and its collaboration with the Beiras Academic Clinical Center, enabling the development, testing, and validation of technologies in real-world scenarios.
Also noteworthy is UBImedical, an incubator focused on developing startups in the fields of health and biotechnology, including medical and pharmaceutical technologies. This initiative plays an essential role in promoting innovation, technology transfer, and connections to the business community, contributing to the creation of concrete solutions with a market impact.
UBI also demonstrates a strong commitment to internationalization, serving as a founding member of the European alliance UNITA - Universitas Montium. Additionally, its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and participation in international sustainability research networks reinforce its position as an institution aligned with global challenges.
